Purpose and Rationale of the Qualification

Workplace Essential Skills are the skills needed for work, learning and life. The programme is designed to support apprentices who have experienced difficulties within a company working environment. The purpose of this skills programme is to prepare a learner to operate as an employee and to complete daily tasks and activities at a workplace.

Workplace Essential Skills are used in every industry and at different levels of complexity. They provide the foundation for learning other skills and enable employees to adapt to modern working practices and workplace change. Workplace Essential Skills are the core skills you need to continue learning and to complete daily tasks and activities at work. The typical learners for the skills programme is employed and unemployed South Africans, including those employed or previously employed in low-skilled occupations.

The purpose of this skills programme is to prepare a learner to operate as an employee and to complete daily tasks and activities at a workplace. Skills Programme Outcomes:

A qualified learner will be able to:

  • Understand and apply work ethics, norms and values.
  • Identify safety and legal provisions relating to the work and responsibilities of an employer and employee.
  • Perform tasks in a n umber of critical workplace competencies.

Curriculum Information

Learning Unit 1: Workplace Essential Skills

  • ELO1: Identify responsibilities in the workplace environment of an employer and employee.
  • ELO2: Understand and apply work ethics, norms and values.
  • ELO3: Identify safety and legal provisions relating to the work and responsibilities of an employer and employee.
  • ELO4: Perform tasks in a n umber of critical workplace competencies.

The learning will enable students to demonstrate an understanding of:

  • Topic 1: The workplace environment and responsibilities of an employer and employee
  • Topic 2: Employment
  • Topic 3: The organisation of work
  • Topic 4: Concepts related to the employee’s performance of work
  • Topic 5: Employer organisations
  • Topic 6: External environments in which organisations operate
  • Topic 7: Employer-Employee relationships
  • Topic 8: Workplace health and safety
  • Topic 9: Understand and apply work ethics, norms and values
  • Topic 10: Ethics at work
  • Topic 11: Communication
  • Topic 12: Current trends influencing work

Content: Above topic requirements will be covered by eBook and eVideos via Masterskill LMS platform.

Suggested Contact Hrs: 20 hrs (based on facilitator sessions)

Assessments: 7x Formative Assessments and 1x Summative Assessment are available via Masterskill LMS and ePortfolio platforms.

Suggested Assessment Hrs: 11 hrs

Additional to above portfolio assessments learner would also be required to complete Workplace assessments:

Workplace assessments must take place in a real workplace i.e., at a functioning organisation. Employed students will apply the workplace assessments in the organisation where they are employed, while unemployed learners must find a workplace that will host them, where they can implement the workplace assessments of this occupational skills programme. The same workplace must assign work place supervisors who can sign off on student workplace assessment checklists. Duration for workplace assessments could equate to 80 hours or 10 days.

A FISA (Final Integrated Supervised Assessment) has been developed and can be conducted either offline or on the MasterAssess platform.
